Jeffrey B. Cockrell, owner at Gettin’ Short LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in coaching and training.
With over four decades of experience, Mr. Cockrell has built a distinguished career in coaching and training. He currently leads Gettin’ Short LLC, founded in 2016, which encompasses JeffCockrell.com and Veteran Academy. As a top-ranked Dale Carnegie instructor through JeffCockrell.com, he is highly sought-after for fostering open, results-driven environments that have empowered companies like Halliburton, Recaro, and Brinks to achieve innovative, multimillion-dollar outcomes. His passion extends to the Veteran Academy, where he helps veterans transition successfully to civilian life, providing them with essential tools and support.
Mr. Cockrell’s background also includes distinguished military service, with roles as first lieutenant aboard the USS Acadia from 1990 to 1993, command relationships with J5, U.S. Forces Japan from 1990 to 1992, detachment officer-in-charge at Assault Craft Unit 4 from 1988 to 1990, P-7 division officer and assistant DCA on the USS Saratoga from 1986 to 1988, and communications officer on the USS Blakely from 1982 to 1985. He also dedicates his time as operations chairman for Relay For Life at the American Cancer Society Inc. He laid a solid education foundation, earning a Bachelor of Arts in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia from 1978 to 1982, as well as certifications as a master trainer with Dale Carnegie & Associates, high-performance coach with Gettin’ Short LLC, and trainer with Dale Carnegie & Associates.
Mr. Cockrell’s current focus is on the Veteran Academy, an initiative inspired by his 25 years as a Dale Carnegie trainer and his experience as a former Navy officer. This program was sparked by a powerful moment at a conference, where he learned that 22 veterans commit suicide daily. Drawing from his own challenges after 11 years of military service, he recognized that veterans, trained to follow strict “rules of engagement” in the military, often struggle to adapt to the civilian world’s nuanced communication and relationship dynamics. His academy provides veterans with new tools and “rules of engagement” that go beyond career success to build fulfilling lives. Through Dale Carnegie principles, the Veteran Academy helps veterans strengthen communication skills and relationships, achieve personal well-being, and find meaningful purpose.
Mr. Cockrell believes veterans need an intentional framework for post-military life. The Veteran Academy helps them define success, whether it is fostering family relationships, improving health, or seeking spiritual fulfillment, then pursue qualities to build that life. Through weekly meetings, workshops, and the “Mission That Matters” course, veterans set goals, refine plans, and hold each other accountable, mirroring the military’s structured check-ins. He also emphasizes self-awareness and personal responsibility, encouraging veterans to adapt their actions for better outcomes. His program also promotes empathy and positive reinforcement, helping veterans navigate relationships in both personal and professional settings. He also plans to offer an online course and a year-long program, creating a lasting community for veterans to develop high-performance habits that support their aspirations.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Cockrell received the Trusted Trainer Award, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and multiple Competitive Excellence Awards. He attributes his success to his deep faith and conviction that he is fulfilling his true calling. In the coming years, he envisions sustaining and significantly expanding his business to build a global network of over a thousand trainers using the Dale Carnegie model. Additionally, he plans to introduce a licensing model for trainers, a move he anticipates will double their income while further fueling the organization’s growth and success.
