Mr. Curtis, general contractor and co-owner of Tumalo Construction in Bend, Oregon, is an esteemed professional whose diverse experiences have given him a unique advantage in his field. Since 2022, he has been at the helm of his company, responsible for overseeing his subcontractors and assigning tasks to his employees. As a liaison, Mr. Curtis is also in constant contact with subcontractors, clients, material vendors, and delivery services. Among other tasks, he manages sales, performs accounting tasks, provides estimates to customers, and resolves any issues that might arise.
Frequently working long hours from Monday through Friday, which span anywhere from 10 to 12 hours, Mr. Curtis occasionally works on the weekends when necessary. Describing his role as very hands-on, he enjoys the dynamic work environment and engaging with his team as a servant leader.
Before deciding to pivot into entrepreneurship, Mr. Curtis was an estimator for Simplicity by Hayden Homes, a distinguished regional home builder in Redmond, Oregon, from 2020 to 2022. His role required him to perform estimates for the construction of hundreds of homes along the I-5 corridor, spanning Southern Oregon to the Portland area. Mr. Curtis also worked in sales and as a project manager at Cement Elegance in Bend between 2016 and 2020.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Curtis held roles as an agent in the insurance and financial services sector, where he gained valuable industry knowledge. He also succeeded with a web development company, acquiring a foundation in basic computer programming. These experiences were instrumental in Mr. Curtis’s ability to lead his own company.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Curtis attended Oregon State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a minor in general science, cum laude, in 2000. He has remained affiliated with the Golden Key International Honour Society, where he served as the Oregon State University chapter president, and the Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity as a member and former membership chair.
Besides his work-related commitments, Mr. Curtis enjoys giving back through local initiatives. He frequently volunteers for nonprofit organizations like The Salvation Army and dresses up as Santa Claus for local foster children. Mr. Curtis also generously donates to charities like Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots Foundation, and a local toy drive with Bend Elks.
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Curtis faced significant challenges in the construction industry during the economic crisis that began in 2008. Despite his hardship, he emerged stronger and is grateful to be back in the industry, garnering significant success doing what he loves best. Notably, Tumalo Construction’s second year in business surpassed $1 million in revenue, marked by high profitability, minimal debt, low startup capital and a substantial backlog of work extending into the following year.
Mr. Curtis intends to expand operations at Tumalo Construction, branching out into providing services for multi-family residential homes. He also wants to establish a nonprofit organization for hawk or wild bird rescue and support. Influenced by his father, this cause is dear to him. Additionally, Mr. Curtis intends to support existing local organizations in this area.
