Steven Cantrell, President and Chief Executive Officer at MacKen Associates, Founding President at Medex Urgent Care, and Chief Strategy and Network Development Officer at Graybill Medical Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Health Care Management and Consulting.

Mr. Cantrell’s career is marked by a series of strategic roles and impactful initiatives that have shaped his professional journey. Since 2005, he has served as the president and chief executive officer of MacKen Associates, a health care consulting firm, where he provides strategic direction to various organizations and offers temporary interim services that include chief executive officers, chief operating officers, and other leading roles.

As the founding president of Medex Urgent Care in Seal Beach, California, since 2021, his urgent care center has prioritized genuine care and exceptional customer service to all its patients. A venture born out of a personal experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, the opportunity drove him to create a medical facility that provides premium health care services. Offering a range of services to patients, from primary care to physicals and exams to laboratory testing, injury wound care and more, Mr. Cantrell and his team strive to exceed expectations.

In 2024, Mr. Cantrell expanded his entrepreneurial horizons by becoming the chief strategy and network development officer at Graybill Medical Group, a medical practice in Escondido, California. Here, he has been instrumental in guiding the organization through market challenges, focusing on contracting, development and brand expansion.

Leading a diverse, rewarding career for more than 40 years, Mr. Cantrell formerly enjoyed a tenure as a strategy and development consultant for Rise Health from 2022 to 2023. He also held several other significant positions, including chief business development officer at Titanium Healthcare Inc. and chief operating officer at Capital Health Partners between 2020 and 2022.

Mr. Cantrell’s earlier career included serving as the vice president of strategic operations at Coast Healthcare Management LLC from 2017 to 2020. As the chief development officer at Pioneer Medical Group Inc. in Cerritos, California, between 2016 and 2017, he played a pivotal role in growing the physician network by 500% and increasing membership by 800%. Mr. Cantrell’s leadership skills were also demonstrated as the senior director at HealthCare Partners Southern California from 2010 to 2016. Among other noteworthy roles, he was the chief executive officer and chief operating officer of Affiliated Doctors of Orange County, where he successfully reversed multimillion-dollar losses into profitability through financial restructuring.

Mr. Cantrell’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career in health care management. After graduating from Hilltop High School in 1983, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in public administration and finance from San Diego State University in 1991.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Cantrell is deeply committed to community service and civic engagement. He has been a board member of Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse since 2013 and actively participates in the San Diego Yacht Club. His involvement with the Los Alamitos Education Foundation and the advisory board of MeUglobal reflects his dedication to education and global health initiatives. Most notably, Mr. Cantrell co-founded Athletes for Life in 2017, a foundation inspired by a friend’s sudden cardiac arrest. This initiative led to creating a mobile cardiac testing unit that tested thousands nationwide, saving lives and doubling American Heart Association statistics.

Reflecting on his career, Mr. Cantrell attributes his success to a combination of luck and a steadfast commitment to ethical practices and service. Looking ahead, he is focused on establishing a quality health care facility in American Samoa, a U.S. territory in the South Pacific Ocean, which will include urgent care, immediate care and outpatient surgery services. This project underscores Mr. Cantrell’s dedication to improving health care access in underserved regions while leaving a meaningful legacy that aligns with his lifelong mission of prioritizing patient care over profit-driven motives.
