Across a professional life of 55 years and counting, Ms. Nelson has showcased interest in a wide range of fields and eagerness to start new things. Originally pursuing an education in math, she developed an interest in speech and chose to switch directions. In 1970, Ms. Nelson started her career as a graduate clinical supervisor with the Truesdale Speech Center and a speech-language-hearing therapist with the Sunshine School for Orthopedically Handicapped Children. She progressed her speech-language pathology expertise further as a speech and hearing therapist at the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center, a clinical supervisor at North Carolina Memorial Hospital’s Institute of Speech and Hearing Sciences, a speech pathologist at the Lee-Harnett Mental Health Center and Harnett County Schools, and a speech-language pathologist at the Kirk Center, as well as running her own private speech-language pathology practice from 1976 to 1986.

Beginning in 1976, Ms. Nelson was also associated with the department of speech communication at North Carolina State University. During a 10-year tenure, she fully developed and implemented a speech pathology program at the institution, collaborating with the heads of numerous other departments. Ms. Nelson also taught 15 hours of classes each week, established a clinic and helped create a textbook on the subject. She is deeply proud of the work she did during this time, especially witnessing many of her students going on to pursue graduate degrees in the field.

In the 1990s, Ms. Nelson changed directions again while focusing on raising her children. In 1992, she founded and managed Horse Tack and Polo Parts, a successful retail store. From 1993 to 1998, Ms. Nelson owned and managed Kellybrook Farm, where she boarded, trained and showed thoroughbred horses. Building on her business success, she went on to contribute as a financial consultant with Lerman and Associates LLC, a sales account executive at New Horizons Computer Learning Center, an account administrator and manager with First Union Securities, and a marketing manager of insurance and annuities with the Stanford Group Company.

Noting her interest in learning and getting new businesses off the ground, Ms. Nelson founded Kosha Enterprises in 2007 while simultaneously serving as a real estate broker for Nelson Properties and Development. Further leaning into her skill at building new ventures, she created G&G Connections LLC the same year. Still serving as a partner for this organization today, Ms. Nelson aids business development by helping connect investors and experts to projects that can make use of their insight. She has also demonstrated capability with navigating government as a grant writer and planning commissioner for the city of Florence, Colorado.

Ms. Nelson’s most recent endeavor is as the director of training and quality assurance at Project AGO. Through this company, she is exploring her latest fascination, the world of hydroponics. Under Ms. Nelson’s guidance, Project AGO is creating a commercial hydroponic greenhouse. She is aiding primarily in organizing the process and training others in how to carry it forward.

Since embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Nelson has consistently drawn upon the foundation she laid through her education. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English, education and speech pathology with a minor in history from the University of Redlands in 1969. Subsequently, Ms. Nelson earned a Master of Arts in speech pathology from the same institution in 1970. Committed to lifelong learning, she completed coursework in computer programming, statistics and learning disabilities at North Carolina State University in 1983 and further classes in computer technology at Arapahoe Community College in 1998.

Outside of her extensive professional experience, Ms. Nelson is also a loving wife, mother to two, stepmother to four, grandmother to 12 and great-grandmother to seven. She finds joy in crocheting, reading, doing yard work, playing golf and horseback riding. Continuing the trend she has established over the decades, Ms. Nelson fully intends to stay committed to curiosity, adventure and learning in the years ahead.
