Susan O. Schall, PhD, Founder, Lead Consultant at SOS Consulting, LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in consulting.

Dr. Schall became involved in her profession because she always enjoyed studying mathematics and science. With encouragement from her father, a vocal advocate in science, she chose to study engineering. Her grandfather, a carpenter, helped her to develop a love of building. As a high school student, she wanted to be a patent lawyer, but after visiting a string of universities and learning about their pre-law programs, she decided not to pursue the field. Once she began her engineering program, she never considered law again. Now, Dr. Schall pays it forward by mentoring young women. She earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1981. She then matriculated at the Pennsylvania State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1982, a Master of Science in industrial engineering in 1986 and a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial engineering in 1988.

Dr. Schall commenced her career as a technical superintendent of Control System Engineering for the DuPont Engineering Polymers in 1997, remaining until 1998. She then served as the president of Susan O. Schall Process Improvement Consulting from 1999 to 2002. From 2002 to 2004, she was a methodology director of RR Donnelley & Sons Company Inc. Since 2004, she has been the founder and operations leader of SOS Consulting, LLC and since 2017, she has been an authorized partner of Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team and of Everything Disc at John Wiley & Sons Inc. She has also been the founder and lead consultant of ABET Foundation, Inc. since 2014. As she progresses in her career, Dr. Schall would like to make her work more visible and widely known. She focuses on small manufacturing businesses because she feels they are often overlooked because of larger companies. Dr. Schall wants to have a transformative effect on small manufacturing in the future.

Reflecting on her career path, one of the highlights of Dr. Schall’s career was her first client. She is proud of the work she did for them, which involved bringing some data tools together. She was excited to make a difference in an organization and to have a positive impact on the people who work there. As a testament to her success, Dr. Schall has received myriad awards, including a Fellow Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers in 2020. She has also received a Medallion Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers from the Pennsylvania State University in 2018, an Outstanding Engineering Alumna Award from the College of Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University in 2009 and a Distinguished Service Award from the Engineering Alumni Society at the Pennsylvania State University in 1999. She is also listed in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America.
