Dr. Smith pursued his higher education at the University of Washington in Seattle, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1967, and continued his academic pursuits at the City University of Seattle, where he graduated with an MBA in 1978. After completing postgraduate coursework at California Western University—now the California Western School of Law—he attended Pacific Western University in Hawaii, concluding his studies and receiving a PhD in 1983. In 1967, Dr. Smith began his career with the Allstate Insurance Company, where he continues to work to this day. Over the course of his tenure, he held myriad positions at the company, including working as a claim investigator, a claim evaluator, a regional administrative assistant, a district claim manager and a division claims manager, among others. In 1983, he accepted the post of a home office field claim manager.
Since 2004, Dr. Smith has worked as the owner of Diverse Education Evolution, which works to eliminate the school-to-prison pipeline, ensure racial equity and fairness, increase funding and challenge institutionalized racism in the educational system. The organization participates in legislative advocacy to this end, and additionally advocates and organizes peaceful public demonstrations to fight for civil liberties and human rights. Dr. Smith has served as a guest lecturer for numerous Midwestern universities and schools and has been recognized for his professional achievements with multiple awards. His accolades and honors include an Ambassador for Peace Recognition from the Washington State Ambassadors for Peace Association, a Service Award from the Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America and the 2007 Member of the Year Award from the Seattle Breakfast Group Education Committee. He attributes his success to his parents—who have always been strong advocates for education—and as a further testament to his success and stature, he has been featured in the 24th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry.
