Title: Fashion Designer
Company: Rodney Nichols 1973 Fashion Designs and Yendor Slohicin Fashion House
Location: Trenton, New Jersey, United States
Rodney E. Nichols, Fashion Designer at Rodney Nichols 1973 Fashion Designs and Yendor Slohicin Fashion House, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in fashion design.
Coming from humble beginnings, Mr. Nichols became passionate about fashion at a young age, and was subsequently taught to sew by his mother and grandmother. With the support of art teachers, he went on to teach himself fashion illustration, pattern drafting, and more, leading to apprenticeships with several area formalwear and bridal shops. Noted as a child prodigy by The Trentonian at the age of 8, Mr. Nichols was able to carve out a stellar reputation for himself by his ability to conduct draping and drawings akin to the notable designers of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1950s without having a prior background in fashion.
For the past 40 years, Mr. Nichols has excelled as an independent fashion designer and the head of Rodney Nichols 1973 Fashion Designs and Yendor Slohicin Fashion House, a high-concept label with haute couture and ready-to-wear sportswear and formal lines for men and women. In 1984, he sold his first original dress, marking the official start of the label. Marked by avant-garde sensibilities, a confident and playful approach to color, and a relaxed interplay between volume and tailoring, he describes his collections as “haute couture denim.” Notably, Yendor Sloh’cin was featured at the Explosion IV event in Trenton, New Jersey, and at New York and Philadelphia Fashion Week events throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
In addition to this position, Mr. Nichols has found success as a senior staff representative for the New Jersey State Chapter for the Communications Workers of America Local 1033 since 1984. In this role, he monitors agency compliance with union rules and regulations, participates in collective bargaining negotiations, and handles member grievances. Likewise, he had been active as an independent caregiver for his mother from 2013 until her tragic passing in 2024. An expert in costume design, he has also created hundreds of fashion illustrations over the past several decades. Beyond his primary endeavors in fashion, Mr. Nichols began to experiment with fine art sculpture and non-wearable textile pieces.
Often called “Dr. Fashion,” Mr. Nichols is renowned as an outspoken advocate for independent and underground fashion designers and other creatives, as well as a recruiter for various labels. His work was notably selected for inclusion in the 2003 Art Philadelphia Consumer Show dubbed “Fashion’ters. Moreover, Mr. Nichols remains affiliated with Teamsters Local 115.
Fondly recalling having been stopped in the street by admirers throughout his eclectic career, Mr. Nichols attributes his success to his superb people skills, his refusal to give up on his dreams and his drive to make the world beautiful and safe. He is proud to have established his brand, defined by a crown emblem and the reverse spelling of his name, as it has cemented his status as a consulting authority in the field and usher his future in the dynamic artistic community of San Francisco’s Bay Area. In the coming years, Mr. Nichols hopes to complete his fashion book to go on tour as “Fashion Boy to Fashion Man,” a family album version of fashion drawings and family photos dating back to the 1970s.
