Title: Fashion Designer, Senior Staff Representative
Company: Yendor Sloh’cin, Communications Workers of America Local 1033
Location: Trenton, New Jersey, United States
Rodney E. Nichols, Fashion Designer at Yendor Sloh’cin, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in fashion design.
Coming from humble beginnings, Mr. Nichols’ mother noticed his passion for fashion and soon taught him how to sew. With the support of art teachers, he went on to teach himself fashion illustration, pattern drafting, and more, leading to apprenticeships with several area formalwear and bridal shops. For the past 40 years, Mr. Nichols has excelled as an independent designer and the head of Yendor Sloh’cin, a high-concept label with haute couture and ready-to-wear sportswear and formal lines for men and women. In 1984, he sold his first original dress, marking the official start of the label. Marked by avant-garde sensibilities, a confident and playful approach to color, and a relaxed interplay between volume and tailoring, he describes his collections as “haute couture denim.” Notably, Yendor Sloh’cin was featured at the Explosion IV event in Trenton, New Jersey, and at New York and Philadelphia Fashion Week events throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
Likewise to his fashion endeavors, Mr. Nichols began to experiment with fine art sculpture and non-wearable textile pieces. His work was selected for inclusion in the 2003 Art Philadelphia Consumer Show dubbed “Fashion’ters.” Often called “Dr. Fashion,” he is renowned as an outspoken advocate for independent and underground fashion designers and other creatives, as well as a recruiter for various labels. In addition to launching a successful fashion line, Mr. Nichols has dedicated nearly 40 years of his career as a senior staff representative for the Communications Workers of America Local 1033, protecting the interests of employees of the Lawrence and Mercer County branches of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. In this role, he monitors agency compliance with union rules and regulations, participates in collective bargaining negotiations, and handles member grievances. Since 2013, Mr. Nichols has also served as a caregiver to his mother. He attributes the success of his eclectic career to having great people skills and his drive to make the world beautiful and safe.
