In his youth, Mr. Swartz’s family was constantly moving. In one of those moves, he discovered a warehouse with rusty cans, which he tried to open up. He got a screwdriver to open the lid and witnessed a beautiful red paint pour out from the can. The young Mr. Swartz took it upon himself to paint the warehouse to the best of his ability at the time and fell in love during the process. He began taking clients on a part-time basis, but as his skill and clientele base grew, he decided to officially spearhead his own business. For the past 19 years, since 2001, Mr. Swartz has excelled as the proprietor of Leon Swartz Painting, where he covers commercial, residential and industrial jobs. He is backed by further experience as a supervisor and painter of Duke Power from 1976 to 2001, as well as earlier painting work going back to 1970.

Backed by coursework from Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, Mr. Swartz enjoys the feeling of completing a painting project. Knowing that he has done quality work that satisfies clients, he is honored to have their recommendation that they relay to friends and neighbors. He cites his career highlight has been meeting a variety of great people through his business. Having painted for churches, warehouses, and other facilities, he recalls one of his larger projects was painting for Concord University in North Carolina. In addition to his painting career, Mr. Swartz became a certified EMT in 1980.

The recipient of the Chairman’s Award from Duke Power, Mr. Swartz attributes his success to God and his parents, who taught him if he is going to do something that he must do it right. Devoted to his faith, Mr. Swartz is an elder at his local church and considers Job, from the Bible, as one of his greatest influences for his patience. Likewise, he admires his preacher and his father for their kindness and intelligence. In five years’ time, Mr. Swartz hopes to continue painting for his clients and enjoying his life. He also has hopes to travel once normalcy begins again following the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. His advice to the next generation aspiring to work in his profession is to pay a great deal of attention to detail, as a job well done is what is most important in their line of work. In his spare time, Mr. Swartz serves as a volunteer and donor to the American Red Cross.
