A respected voice in his industry, Mr. Burmeister has accrued more than six decades of experience in farming and agriculture. Growing up and participating on his family farm, he loved the independence of farm work, along with riding along on the tractor with his father and observing various farming and weather events. Since 1952, he has flourished as the owner of Paul Burmeister Farm in Claflin, Kansas. On his 800 acres of farm, about 670 acres is cultivated with hay, wheat, oats, spring oats, smooth bromegrass, different grains, winter wheat and grain sorghum, an important state crop used for animal feed. In addition, Mr. Burmeister sells his products to local grain coops with grain storage facilities, as well as to local cattle farmers.

Alongside his primary role, Mr. Burmeister has served as a member of the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Kansas Natural Resource Coalition since 1975. Over the years, he has also contributed as a farmer-cooperator with the Fort Hays Branch of the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station in 1970, a participant in the University of Akron National Energy Forum in 1976 and a panel member of the Kansas Sustainable Agriculture Conferences in 1991 and 1992. Additionally, he was a member of the farmer advisory committee at the Land Institute from 1995 to 2001 and has been involved with various civic endeavors, including with the Humanities Kansas, the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference Foundation of the United Church of Christ and the 23d General Synod Meeting of the United Church of Christ.

Notably, Mr. Burmeister served in the American Peace Corps in Ludhiana, India from 1961 to 1963 and in the Kansas United States Army National Guard from 1963 to 1969. To match his exceptional knowledge of agriculture, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and agriculture at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas in 1960 and completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Kansas in 1961. In 1970, the U.S. atomic energy commission proposed depositing most of the nation’s radioactive nuclear waste, leading him to become concerned about the hazards surrounding that proposal. From there, Mr. Burmeister took a course between semesters at Fort Hays State University in 1971 called, “Can Man Survive?” that he cites as a highlight of his career. He also recalls teaching high school freshman and sophomore Sunday school classes as a memorable period in his career, as it helped him learn and mature.

Finding great success in his career, Mr. Burmeister was the recipient of the Bankers Award from the Banks of Barton County, Kansas and the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in 1990. He is a life member of the National Wildlife Federation, American Solar Energy Society, Kansas Farmers Union, Kansas State Historical Society and Sierra Club, as well as a founding year member of the Cousteau Society. Additionally, he maintains affiliation with Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Epsilon and numerous environmental organizations. To attest to his legacy, Mr. Burmeister can also be found in numerous editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World. In his spare time, he enjoys photography and hiking.
