Since 2015, Ms. Daniels has prospered as owner of Lillies of the Field in Salt Lake City, a premier thrift shop that provides quality products at affordable prices that are geared to help those in need, with some profits helping formerly incarcerated people, the homeless, and refugees get back on their feet. She began reaching out to the homeless population when she was searching for her son, who was living on the streets in 2008. Though he did not accept her help, he did refer her to others who desperately needed food and clothing assistance. Her desire to help the needy led to her founding the thrift shop, which supports a prisoner release program and donates items to people being released from prisons.
While assisting her community as a direct support specialist at TURN Community Services from 2011 to 2014, Ms. Daniels took the initiative to assist the homeless and collected collecting and transferring usable donated goods such as household items, tools and clothes into the hands of those who needed them most, especially during the brutal winter months. She estimates that over the course of eight years, she was able to help over 750 people per week. So many goods were collected, in fact, that storage units and personal space at home could no longer accommodate the public’s donations and she formed the nonprofit of which Lillies of the Field is a natural extension.
Over the years, Ms. Daniels estimates that she has donated nearly 63,500 pounds of clothes to the homeless population of the Salt Lake City area and her efforts have been rewarded with three nominations for the Best of Salt Lake award. She attributes her success to her determination to become a positive change agent, and in the coming years is hoping to expand her business and be able to pass it down to someone younger who has the same aspirations that she does.
