During this time, he was additionally active in the fields of construction, building, and contracting while also performing as a radio disc jockey. In addition to working for several different restaurants over the years, he served as a volunteer firefighter for 16 years. Likewise, Mr. Handford was a member of his regional chamber of commerce and the Murphy Business Association.
Mr. Handford attributes his success to his wife, Emily, as well as his parents, who instilled in him the importance of hard work and perseverance, and the invaluable connections he has made throughout his career. Notably, he established Smoky Mountain BBQ Company after a shocking injury and a string of bad luck led him to take a course in small business. Among the many highlights of his career, he is incredibly proud of reconnecting with his wife, who he believes is the driving force behind the restaurant’s exceptional business thus far. Looking toward the future, Mr. Handford hopes to continue developing his business, hire more employees and thrive in their second location.
