Hailing from 15 years of experience in the restaurant industry, Mr. Palmer has distinguished himself as a co-owner of Pigman’s Bar-B-Que, a casual barbecue restaurant in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Having initially joined the staff alongside his former roommate, Richard Bruce, in 1985, he and Mr. Bruce went on to become managers for the business in 2002. Upon the retirement of Bill Shaver, the original founder of Pigman’s, Mr. Palmer and Mr. Bruce advanced to become the new owners in 2007.
In addition to his efforts as a business owner, Mr. Palmer has also earned distinction as a prolific community advocate. To wit, Pigman’s acts as a sponsor of several area high schools, donating food to local charities and volunteering its services at various food pantries. For his own part, Mr. Palmer serves as a personal trainer with his local chapter of the YMCA, and serves as a member of several other organizations, including the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, and a past president of his local chapter of Rotary International.
As a testament to Mr. Palmer’s excellence as a restaurateur, Pigman’s has received several accolades under his tenure, including the Best of the Beach Award in 2023, the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce’s Community Partner of the Year Award in 2022, and the Small Business of the Year Award in 2019. Pigman’s was also named as the Second Best Restaurant on Outer Banks by the Virginian-Pilot in 2017. In accounting for his success, Mr. Palmer largely credits the loyalty and talent of his employees, as well as his innate passion for delivering a memorable experience on behalf of his customers.
Among his most cherished accomplishments, Mr. Palmer is particularly proud that Pigman’s was named as the Small Business of the Year in 2019, and to have led the company in its numerous charitable efforts. He is also gratified to have been featured on several local television shows. Looking toward the future, Mr. Palmer aspires to continue developing the brand of Pigman’s, take the restaurant’s famous sauces to the national level, and establish a significant footprint in the industry.
