Randell Glen Major, Owner and Rancher at Major Land & Cattle Co. and Qualifying Broker at Major Ranch Realty, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the Ranching and Real Estate Industries.
Mr. Major has dedicated his life and career to ranching, serving as the owner of Major Land & Cattle Co. for 40 years, with locations in Magdalena, New Mexico, and Lubbock, Texas. His expertise in cattle operations, particularly in determining optimal stocking numbers and understanding the unique requirements for livestock, has established him as a respected authority in his field. Over the course of his tenure in the industry, Mr. Major has been responsible for all aspects of ranch management, including caring for livestock to ensure their health through proper supplementation and access to water, treating injured animals and maintaining fences to prevent cattle from straying onto neighboring properties. He also manages day-to-day operations alongside his wife, handling everything from fence repairs to financial responsibilities.
Having begun his professional journey at age 22, Mr. Major started his own business after growing up immersed in ranch life. Drawing on a family legacy that dates back to 1887 in New Mexico, he learned the intricacies of ranching from an early age. His family later moved to the Great Plains region, where his father managed the ranch that had belonged to Mr. Major’s great-grandfather for over a century. Despite the eventual loss of the family property due to financial hardship, he persevered by consolidating ranches through strategic trades and acquisitions, ultimately accumulating three ranches across three counties in New Mexico.
Throughout his career, Mr. Major has demonstrated adaptability in response to fluctuating cattle markets, unpredictable weather patterns and rising interest rates. Recognizing the importance of diversification for survival in modern ranching, he obtained a real estate license and expanded into selling ranches as a broker, representing Major Ranch Realty. This additional income stream has proven essential during challenging periods, especially with support from his wife.
Mr. Major is particularly proud of building his current operation from modest beginnings, starting with 20 head of cows and growing into ownership of three ranches, while maintaining healthy livestock and minimal debt. He credits lessons learned from his father’s experience with debt as instrumental in shaping his approach to financial management.
Mr. Major earned a high school diploma from New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. The discipline and knowledge gained during his studies have supported his success in managing complex operations and adapting to evolving industry demands. Mr. Major’s real estate license further enhances his ability to navigate land transactions and diversify income sources.
Beyond his primary work obligations, Mr. Major maintains active involvement with industry organizations. He served as the president of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association for several years and currently holds roles as finance chair and member of the nominating committee. These positions reflect Mr. Major’s commitment to advancing the interests of fellow ranchers and contributing to the broader agricultural community.
An accomplished author, Ms. Major published “We Were Cowboys” in 2024, a work that reflects on his experiences and insights gained throughout a lifetime in ranching.
In recognition of his achievements, Mr. Major has received numerous honors, including the Rancher of the Year Award from both the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the New Mexico State Fair.
Looking ahead, Mr. Major intends to continue operating his ranch while striving for greater organization within the business. He remains committed to staying actively involved in daily operations, with the ultimate goal of passing on the legacy to future generations of his family.
