Mr. Dent has established himself in mixed martial arts, now serving as the owner, operator and head instructor at GriffonRawl Combat Sports & Fitness in Mentor, Ohio, a role he has held since 2002. Under his leadership, the gym has undergone significant expansion and modernization, investing his prizefighting earnings to update facilities, hire experienced staff and broaden the range of services available to the community. Mr. Dent’s daily presence at the gym is marked by direct engagement with clients, private instruction and teaching full classes open to the public. As a fight team and competition team manager, he has played an instrumental role in guiding his team to achieve more than 300 amateur and professional victories.
Before assuming ownership of GriffonRawl Combat Sports & Fitness, Mr. Dent began his martial arts training in 1993 after graduating from Ledgemont High School in Thompson, Ohio. He developed an early interest in karate at Richard Fike’s Madison Combined Martial Arts school, where he earned a first-degree black belt. This foundational experience was pivotal in shaping Mr. Dent’s approach to martial arts instruction and competition.
In 1997, Mr. Dent entered the amateur Muay Thai ring, supported by Dan Rawling, then-owner of GriffonRawl. This period marked the beginning of his competitive fighting career and set the stage for his transition into professional mixed martial arts. Mr. Dent made his professional debut a few years later in 2003, securing victory with a triangle choke submission. That same year, he captured the first of five professional championships, launching a career that would take him across Canada, Mexico and Las Vegas, Nevada, the epicenter of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Over the course of his career, Mr. Dent accumulated 22 professional MMA victories and competed on the international stage.
Among his many achievements, Mr. Dent earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and multiple championship titles, including EFC Lightweight Championship with Extreme Fighting Challenge, IFBL Lightweight and Welterweight Championships with the International Fighting & Boxing League, Lightweight Championship with the North American Allied Fighting Championship, and NLF Lightweight Championship with Next Level Fighting. In addition to these titles. He was also recognized by the UFC for Fight of the Night against Roger Huerta and Submission of the Night against Cameron Dollar. Mr. Dent’s visibility has extended beyond competition through media involvement, including competing on Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom” in 2009 and hosting an MMA-focused radio talk show on WWGK Radio (AM 1540 KNR2) in Cleveland.
Throughout his career, Mr. Dent has remained dedicated to sharing his knowledge with others, teaching lessons learned from years spent in the cage, ring and on the mat. His commitment to martial arts education and community engagement is further demonstrated by his role as a fitness and self-defense instructor at New Life Christian Academy.
In addition to his numerous championship titles, Mr. Dent was inducted into the Cleveland Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2024 for his contributions to the field. Eager for future success, he continues to focus on developing GriffonRawl Combat Sports & Fitness by either opening additional locations or exploring franchising opportunities. Mr. Dent also plans to continue mentoring aspiring fighters and giving back to the mixed martial arts community.
