Location: Lihue, Hawaii, United States
Christopher D. Holmes, Owner and Operator at Kauai Bound, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Travel and Hospitality.
Mr. Holmes has served as the owner and operator of Kauai Bound since 2013, establishing a reputation for excellence in the rental industry on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Over more than a decade, he has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when approximately one-third of local businesses closed permanently. Despite receiving minimal government support due to his status as a non-W2 employee, Mr. Holmes maintained operations without incurring significant debt by relying on careful budgeting, strategic planning and an optimistic outlook. His business has remained a stable presence amid continual turnover among neighboring establishments, earning recognition for exceptional service and customer satisfaction.
Committed to providing high-quality snorkeling and beach gear, as well as golf clubs tailored to the needs of both affluent vacationers and casual golfers, Mr. Holmes strategically positioned his shop near Kalapaki Beach, one mile from Timbers Resort and just over a mile from the airport, ensuring accessibility for visitors. Relying primarily on word-of-mouth referrals and positive online reviews rather than traditional advertising, Mr. Holmes has cultivated a loyal clientele from around the world.
Before founding Kauai Bound, Mr. Holmes spent five years with Captain Andy’s, a sailing company on Kauai. This role followed his relocation to the island after volunteering locally, which led him to pursue new professional opportunities in Hawaii’s tourism sector. Mr. Holmes’s experience at Captain Andy’s allowed him to develop relationships with influential community leaders, including the director of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and local government officials.
Before moving to Hawaii, Mr. Holmes worked for the Parks and Recreation Department in Granby, Missouri. There, he automated the payroll system, significantly reducing costs for the department. This position followed his tenure at Time Warner in Kansas City, where he began with American Cablevision and advanced to computer operations supervisor. In this capacity, Mr. Holmes managed all mainframe operations until the company relocated its data center to San Antonio, Texas.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Holmes served in the U.S. Air Force, gaining valuable skills that would later inform his approach to business management and operations. He also completed college coursework at DeVry University before earning an associate degree in 1991. Mr. Holmes’s academic background provided a strong foundation in technical skills that proved instrumental throughout his career in technology management and later as an entrepreneur.
In addition to his business achievements, Mr. Holmes is recognized for his culinary talents developed during four years as a tableside chef at a French restaurant in Arizona. There, he honed his knowledge of wine and mastered French cuisine prepared tableside, skills he continues to utilize today. During his years in Kansas City, Mr. Holmes participated regularly in the American Royal Barbecue Contest and was often named a finalist for his exceptional ribs. After relocating to Hawaii, he embraced local traditions by attending luaus hosted by native Hawaiian families and sharing his signature Kansas City-style ribs, a contribution that quickly became a beloved tradition among friends and neighbors.
Throughout his professional journey, Mr. Holmes has drawn inspiration from his diverse clientele spanning Shanghai, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Europe. At his desk sits a world map densely covered with push pins marking customers’ home countries, a testament to his global reach and reputation for hospitality. Mr. Holmes has received generous invitations from clients abroad, including offers to stay at guest houses near prestigious destinations, such as the St. Andrews golf course in Scotland.
Kauai Bound has consistently received accolades, including the Reader’s Choice Award from Hawaii Magazine for four consecutive years, with the most recent announcement pending. The shop is also ranked number one on Yelp and boasts hundreds of five-star reviews across other platforms, such as TripAdvisor and Google.
Looking ahead, Mr. Holmes intends to further develop Kauai Bound by expanding marketing initiatives beyond word-of-mouth referrals and limited social media engagement. He plans to increase visibility through partnerships with organizations such as the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau while continuing to provide exceptional customer service and high-quality equipment rentals. Ultimately, Mr. Holmes aims to sell the business and mentor new owners before embracing retirement pursuits. His career reflects adaptability, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to excellence within both business operations and community engagement on Kauai Island.
