Lee Lampland, Owner and President at Seahorse Consulting, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Advising Shipping Companies in the Maritime Industry.

With a career spanning six decades, Mr. Lampland has established himself as an authority in maritime consulting and vessel management. Since founding Seahorse Consulting in 2000, he has served as a part-time technical adviser and on-call resource to shipping companies and vessel operators. In this capacity, Mr. Lampland addresses complex technical issues affecting active vessels, particularly those involving aging ships for which he retains institutional knowledge dating back to 1991. His expertise is frequently sought to bridge the critical workforce gap that emerged after a prolonged downturn in the marine sector during the 1980s and early 1990s, a period that led to a shortage of mid-career professionals and left many younger workers without experienced mentors.

Mr. Lampland’s consultancy is distinguished by his ability to select projects that align with his interests and expertise. He continues to provide oversight on new ship construction and design projects, drawing on his extensive background supervising both blueprint development and shipyard operations. Over the past 10 to 15 years, his focus has included managing contracts for organizations such as the Military Sealift Command and consulting for Matson Navigation Company. Mr. Lampland’s work often involves coordinating teams of inspectors and ensuring that all phases of shipbuilding meet rigorous standards before final approval.

Before establishing Seahorse Consulting, Mr. Lampland held the role of director of vessel engineering at Matson, Inc., a maritime transportation company headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 2007 to 2010. In this position, he oversaw all ships and shipping operations for the company, applying his deep understanding of engineering principles and operational logistics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Lampland spent over five years with Sabine Towing and Transportation in Port Arthur, Texas, where he contributed to various aspects of marine transportation management.

Earlier, Mr. Lampland also worked with International Marine Carriers Inc. on Long Island, New York, for a decade, further expanding his knowledge of international shipping practices and vessel operations. His initial shore-side experience followed several years at American Mail Line, which was later acquired by American President Lines, where he transitioned from sea-based roles to positions focused on logistics and fleet management.

Before entering the private sector, Mr. Lampland fulfilled his five-year government service requirement by sailing on American flagships during the Vietnam War as part of his commitment following graduation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1967. He also honorably served with the U.S. Army, gaining valuable experience that informed his later work in both military and civilian maritime contexts.

Mr. Lampland’s educational foundation was laid at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in marine engineering in 1967. This rigorous academic training provided him with essential skills for navigating both technical challenges and leadership responsibilities throughout his varied roles across shipping companies nationwide.

Throughout his career journey, Mr. Lampland has been affiliated with several prominent professional organizations within the maritime sector. He was an early member of the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association and is a life member of the Society of Port Engineers, though he is no longer active as a port engineer.

Beyond his professional commitments, Mr. Lampland has demonstrated a long-standing dedication to civic engagement and community service. He volunteers locally through his church and manages a private apple orchard as a principal hobby during semi-retirement. Each autumn’s harvest is donated entirely to local senior citizen homes and food shelves, a tradition made possible with help from Mr. Lampland’s grandchildren, who assist in gathering and distributing fruit throughout the community.

Among the many projects that have defined Mr. Lampland’s career, he is most proud of leading the installation phase for a classified U.S. Army initiative involving the Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX-1). This unique vessel was constructed in Brownsville, Texas, to house the world’s largest X-band radar system for missile detection along strategic corridors between South Korea and the United States. Due to security clearance restrictions barring non-U.S. citizens from accessing the vessel, Mr. Lampland assumed full responsibility for all onboard installations, a testament to his trustworthiness and technical acumen. Notably, the SBX-1 remains operational in Honolulu today.

A key lesson Mr. Lampland emphasizes is the importance of building strong professional relationships within what he describes as a close-knit industry network. He credits much of his longevity and ongoing professional growth to contacts made while working for highly regarded shipping firms across the country. These connections continue to generate consulting opportunities as former colleagues seek out Mr. Lampland’s guidance for challenging projects or operational dilemmas.

Looking ahead, Mr. Lampland intends to remain engaged professionally by taking on innovative projects that reflect technological advancements within the shipping and marine engineering fields. He remains committed to visiting shipyards worldwide to observe emerging construction methods and ensure he stays abreast of developments shaping the future of global shipping. Mr. Lampland’s enduring influence stems from both technical mastery and an unwavering commitment to mentorship within an evolving industry landscape, a legacy built on six decades of dedicated service advising shipping companies in the maritime sector.
