Title: Chief Executive Officer
Company: Blue Agave Importers LLP
Location: Denver, Colorado, United States
Bill Foss, Chief Executive Officer at Blue Agave Importers LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements and leadership in the Beverage Industry.
Over the course of a career spanning nearly six decades, Mr. Foss has distinguished himself through a series of transformative roles across athletics, environmental contracting and the premium spirits sector. Since 2008, he has served as the owner and chief executive officer of Blue Agave Importers LLP, where he is best known for creating Suavecito tequila. Under Mr. Foss’ guidance, the company has flourished and now distributes its flagship product in 40 states. Suavecito tequila holds the distinction of being the top-selling tequila at Total Wine and More, the largest liquor store chain in the United States. Notably, Mr. Foss’ business has doubled in size over the past five years and is currently in the process of being sold as he prepares for retirement.
Mr. Foss’ most notable achievement is his creation of what many experts consider to be the world’s smoothest tequila. Several key innovations set apart Suavecito tequila: it is crafted from highland agave sourced from unique mountain land, an elite category representing less than 10% of all tequilas, is aged well beyond industry standards and is uniquely enhanced with 2% agave nectar. This proprietary formula delivers an extraordinarily smooth sipping experience and has earned Suavecito repeated recognition as the number one tasting tequila at events such as the Denver Tequila Festival for eight consecutive years. Mr. Foss does not rely on celebrity endorsements or traditional advertising. Instead, he invests in direct tastings at Total Wine and More locations nationwide, introducing thousands of consumers to his product each week.
The success of Suavecito tequila is further underscored by critical partnerships forged under Mr. Foss’ leadership. Five years ago, José Garcia, a third-generation distillery owner from Mexico, became a 22% shareholder after investing more than $1 million in the company. This collaboration enabled Suavecito to maintain production quality and meet extraordinary demand during challenging periods, such as when new tariffs required rapid delivery of large orders to Total Wine and More. Mr. Foss also credits much of his national expansion to experienced consultants in California and Texas who leveraged decades of industry expertise to secure distribution across hundreds of retail outlets.
Before his tenure at Blue Agave Importers LLP, Mr. Foss was the chief executive officer of Loyalty Environmental Contractors for more than 25 years, between 1982 and 2008. He entered the contracting field after concluding his coaching career, initially handling small projects before expanding into environmental contracting with a focus on asbestos abatement. By his early 50s, Mr. Foss had grown the business to employ 350 individuals across four states, including approximately 250 Mexican nationals who were all properly licensed through a five-day EPA asbestos abatement course. Upon selling this successful enterprise and retiring from contracting, he embarked on his journey into agave farming in Mexico, a venture that ultimately led to his accomplishments in the spirits industry.
Earlier in his professional life, Mr. Foss built a reputation as a basketball coach at both collegiate and professional levels. His career began after graduating from college as a college basketball coach before advancing to coach professionally until transitioning out of athletics in 1982.
Mr. Foss’ academic background provided a strong foundation for his varied career pursuits. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, in 1968 and went on to complete a master’s degree at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. His time at Knox College was particularly formative. He was recognized as an All-City Chicago basketball player as the only white player on his team, and continued competing in both football and basketball at the collegiate level. Mr. Foss remains proud of being Knox College’s sole athlete to earn All-Conference honors in both sports. Academically gifted as well, he achieved a score of 790 on the mathematics Graduate Record Examination during his senior year, placing him in the 99th percentile among college graduates nationwide.
Mr. Foss’ achievements have been recognized with numerous accolades, including 10 gold medals awarded to Suavecito tequila at international spirit competitions. Throughout his professional journey, he has attributed much of his success to intelligence, competitiveness and determination, qualities honed during his years as a student-athlete at Knox College, and to surrounding himself with seasoned professionals whose expertise proved invaluable as he navigated new industries.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Foss enjoys spending time with family, especially working alongside his son, who holds three master’s degrees and serves as the controller at Blue Agave Importers LLP. As he approaches retirement following the sale of Suavecito tequila, he looks forward to exploring business opportunities abroad in markets such as Russia, Asia and England. Among them, Mr. Foss has plans underway for a new tequila brand developed alongside his son, distinct from Suavecito, remaining committed to innovation within the spirits industry.
