Calvina Neylon, president at Neylon Construction LLC and Neylon Excavating LLC, has been recognized by Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements and leadership in the construction industry.

Ms. Neylon’s stellar career in construction is marked by entrepreneurial vision and a commitment to excellence. As owner and president of Neylon Construction LLC since 2019, she has overseen the company’s emergence as a union contractor and guided its substantial growth. Under her leadership, the business achieved an 87 percent increase in profits last year and has maintained a steady upward trajectory for five consecutive years. This expansion included the addition of approximately 11 employees and the creation of two new positions, strengthening the workforce.

In her present positions, Ms. Neylon also introduced health insurance benefits for labor staff, reflecting her focus on employee well-being. She likewise navigated industry shifts that saw projects initially awarded to larger firms redistributed to smaller companies such as Neylon Excavating LLC when those larger entities could not meet demand. Although her business is not yet positioned to take on full bids for the largest contracts, Ms. Neylon remains determined to build capacity for such opportunities in the near future.

Prior to founding Neylon Construction LLC, Ms. Neylon established Neylon Excavating LLC in 2012. Over more than a decade at the helm, she developed expertise in business management, organizational structure, underground utilities, and excavating. The company specializes in precise trenching for utility installation—supporting electrical and plumbing contractors without performing the actual utility placement—and has served major clients involved in local data center projects for Amazon, Google, Facebook and Intel. One of Ms. Neylon’s most notable achievements occurred before Amazon’s entry into the market when her team completed several security buildings for the Defense Supply Center in Columbus and at government bases across Indiana, projects that became significant milestones that set a high standard for her organization’s capabilities.

Ms. Neylon’s membership with IBEW Local 18 underscores her commitment to professional development and industry engagement. Throughout her career, she has learned the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges and credits her ability to keep moving forward as essential to her continued success. Beyond her primary pursuits, Ms. Neylon is actively involved as a sponsor and donor supporting children’s extracurricular activities, including youth soccer teams throughout her community. Her engagement extends beyond business interests to fostering positive experiences for young people and contributing broadly to community initiatives.

Ms. Neylon’s academic journey began with enrollment in nursing school where she completed clinical coursework but ultimately decided to pursue business management instead. Financial constraints during a difficult personal time required her to pause her studies before earning an associate degree. This pivotal moment led her to entrepreneurship, as she teamed up with a friend to dig fence post holes on weekends using a bobcat they advertised on Craigslist and laid the foundation for her future businesses.

A strong network of friends and family has played a crucial role in Ms. Neylon’s achievements. She attributes much of her success to building relationships within her community and fostering a supportive environment that allows both her team and business to thrive. Word-of-mouth referrals have been instrumental in expanding her client base and establishing a reputation for quality work.

Looking toward the future, Ms. Neylon plans to expand operations by increasing both personnel and heavy-duty equipment, including additional hydro back trucks, to accommodate ongoing growth within her companies. She also intends to attend major industry events such as the Big Con Expo in Las Vegas to stay up to date on technological advancements that will further enhance operational capabilities. Ms. Neylon encourages others entering the construction field to embrace fear as motivation rather than allowing it to become an obstacle, having overcome years of adversity through determination and resilience herself.
