With nearly three decades of experience in the construction and surveying industry, Mr. Windle has distinguished himself as an expert in construction, commercial and property surveys. His career began while he was still in high school when a licensed land surveyor from Mueller Consulting Land recruited him for fieldwork. This early exposure fostered a passion for the outdoors and set the foundation for Mr. Windle’s future in the industry.
Since 2012, Mr. Windle has excelled as the president of SCW Surveying in Helena, Montana. Established while still employed by Helena Sand and Gravel, he initially provided property surveys within a 100-mile radius of Helena, but as demand grew for his comprehensive expertise, he gradually expanded his service area to approximately 250 miles. By 2018, Mr. Windle transitioned to focusing full-time on his business as the president of SCW Surveying.
Throughout his career at SCW Surveying, Mr. Windle has demonstrated a dynamic approach to business that sets him apart from others in the industry. He is not limited to property or design surveys but offers a full spectrum of services, including construction staking and machine control support for contractors. Managing his own schedule while working with up to eight contractors at any given time, Mr. Windle continues to conduct fieldwork as needed and is actively hiring experienced professionals to join his growing team.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Windle attended college. During his time at university, he remained actively involved in surveying and engineering projects, including summer internships with an engineering company in Colorado. There, Mr. Windle contributed to water infrastructure projects supporting low-income housing developments in Vail and Aspen.
Upon completing his university studies, Mr. Windle accepted a position as a field engineer with Stelling Engineers Inc., where he worked from 2000 to 2004. In this role, he performed construction inspections and designed rural airports throughout Montana. Summers were spent conducting surveys at these locations, while winters were dedicated to designing airport upgrades in the office. This five-year period provided Mr. Windle with valuable experience across multiple facets of engineering and surveying.
In pursuit of professional advancement, Mr. Windle enrolled at Flathead Valley Community College and earned an Associate of Applied Science in surveying in 2005. This academic achievement enabled him to return to Mueller Consulting Land Surveyors as a professional land surveyor from 2005 to 2011. During this tenure, Mr. Windle further refined his technical skills and prepared for licensure.
From 2011 to 2017, Mr. Windle served as a surveyor and project engineer at Helena Sand and Gravel (now Montana Materials & Construction). Here, he managed all surveying requirements for the company and gained hands-on experience with machine-control technologies that were becoming increasingly prevalent with the advent of GPS-enabled construction equipment.
Mr. Windle takes particular pride in founding SCW Surveying and values the autonomy it provides, allowing him to choose both clients and projects that align with his interests and expertise. His reputation for accuracy and reliability has earned him the trust of numerous contractors across Montana.
In addition to his studies at Flathead Valley Community College, Mr. Windle obtained technical knowledge through coursework at Montana State University. He also achieved certification as a professional land surveyor in Montana in 2009. This credential marked a significant milestone in his career and affirmed his expertise within the field.
A member of the Montana Association of Registered Land Surveyors since 2005, Mr. Windle remains committed to professional development within the industry. He attributes much of his success to building strong relationships with contractors by ensuring precise measurements and remaining engaged throughout each project’s lifecycle. When challenges arise on-site, Mr. Windle is dedicated to helping resolve them efficiently. Beyond his professional responsibilities, he is civically engaged as a donor to the DARE Program, a testament to his commitment to supporting youth education and community well-being.
Looking ahead, Mr. Windle plans to further expand SCW Surveying’s presence within Helena by hiring additional licensed land surveyors and mentoring new talent entering the field, including recent graduates eager to pursue careers in surveying. Through dedication to excellence across multiple disciplines within construction and land surveying, he continues to build upon a legacy defined by innovation, integrity and leadership within Montana’s professional community.
