Benet Hennessey, owner at Citron Hennessey Therapy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Mental Health Services.

Mr. Hennessey has established a distinguished career in psychotherapy and counseling, marked by leadership, innovation and a commitment to advancing clinical practice. Over the course of more than 15 years in the profession, he has become recognized for his expertise in evidence-based cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, particularly rational emotive behavior therapy, and for his significant contributions to the field.

Since 2015, Mr. Hennessey has served as the owner and partner at Citron Hennessey Therapy in New York City. In this capacity, he oversees all aspects of the practice, including clinical responsibilities and the management of a team of 40 therapists. Mr. Hennessey is also responsible for guiding therapists through complex cases and developing a training curriculum that leads graduate schools in psychotherapy. His leadership ensures that both clients and clinicians benefit from a high standard of care and professional development.

Before his current role, Mr. Hennessey was the executive director of the Institute for Human Identity from 2012 to 2021. When he assumed this position, the institute faced significant financial challenges after three decades of operation. Through strategic vision and dedication to high-quality clinical training, Mr. Hennessey revitalized the organization, generating at least $1 million in profit and securing its future. Under his direction, the institute earned recognition as Best Counseling Center in New York for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016.

Between 2010 and 2015, Mr. Hennessey held the title of director of graduate training at the Institute for Human Identity. In this role, he played a pivotal role in shaping educational programs that prepared future clinicians for the demands of professional practice. Earlier in his career, Mr. Hennessey worked as a psychotherapist at New York Behavioral Health from 2008 to 2010, where he provided direct care to clients and further developed his clinical skills.

Mr. Hennessey’s journey into psychotherapy was shaped by his early career experiences in London’s art scene. After graduating with honors from college, he assumed leadership roles and later became the director of an art gallery, which subsequently expanded to New York City. While he valued his time working with collectors and artists, Mr. Hennessey became disillusioned with the commodification of art and sought more meaningful work focused on understanding human behavior. This led him to pursue night school studies in psychology, a decision that set him on his current path.

Mr. Hennessey’s extensive academic background has been integral to his professional achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history, with honors, from the University of Reading in 1987. He later completed foundational studies in counseling psychology at City and Islington College in London in 2002, before earning a Master of Arts in psychology education from Columbia University the same year. He also earned a master’s degree in counseling psychology at Columbia in 2008.

In addition to his formal education, Mr. Hennessey’s commitment to ongoing professional development is reflected in several advanced credentials. He received a postmaster’s certificate in advanced clinical practice from New York University, a postgraduate certificate in psychology from the Australian College of Applied Psychology, and completed a primary practicum at the Albert Ellis Institute.

Actively involved with several professional organizations, Mr. Hennessey is affiliated with BCAP, the American Counseling Association and the American Psychological Association. Additionally, he serves as the director emeritus on the board of directors for the Institute for Human Identity, now known as the IHI Therapy Center, and has contributed as a board member since the organization’s name change in 2011.

Throughout his career, Mr. Hennessey has been recognized for his fairness, integrity, compassion, strong sense of duty and personal strength. He credits these qualities for much of his success. Mr. Hennessey remains dedicated to enhancing clinical training for graduate students, ensuring they are better prepared for the real-world challenges faced by clinicians today. He is also committed to leveraging artificial intelligence technology to improve client outcomes through one-on-one work.

Among other goals, Mr. Hennessey intends to explore new opportunities, such as writing a book for children or young adults about essential life lessons often overlooked in traditional education. Concepts such as understanding fairness, recognizing authentic confidence, distinguishing between feelings and facts, and appreciating how thoughts influence emotions would be central themes. Mr. Hennessey’s goal for the book is to promote greater self-awareness and enhanced mental health worldwide.
