Company: Valley National Bank
Location: Bloomfield, New Jersey, United States
John J. D’Arco, Portfolio Manager at Valley National Bank, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements and leadership in Investing and Portfolio Management.
Mr. D’Arco’s career in finance reflects a remarkable trajectory marked by expertise, resilience and a commitment to excellence. Currently serving as the first vice president of portfolio management at Valley National Bank since 2024, he was promoted after excelling as the bank’s vice president of portfolio management from 2022 to 2024. As first vice president, Mr. D’Arco manages a flagship fund with assets totaling $1.6 billion. He also leads a team of four portfolio managers and a chief investment officer, overseeing between 110 and 120 stocks across various strategies. Mr. D’Arco’s responsibilities further include managing a 40-stock portfolio benchmarked against the S&P 500, mirroring sector weightings such as technology, healthcare, industrials and communication services. The team’s disciplined approach emphasizes outperforming the S&P 500 while maintaining lower risk through reduced beta and diversification. Since joining the organization, they have achieved a strong Sharpe ratio and consistently exceeded market benchmarks.
The transition to this leadership role was significant for Mr. D’Arco. At just 31 years old when he joined Valley National Bank in 2022, he was selected by the retiring founder and previous portfolio manager after an extensive search process. The opportunity to lead at such a young age was rare in the industry and stands as a testament to his abilities and reputation. Under Mr. D’Arco’s guidance, the fund experienced less than a 10% decline during a period when the market dropped by 20% and later outperformed the market with a more than 20% gain when the broader market rose by over 15%.
Before joining Valley National Bank, Mr. D’Arco built his expertise at Prudential Financial. From 2021 to 2022, he served as a senior investment research analyst, following several years as an investment research analyst, beginning in 2018. His tenure at Prudential was particularly distinguished during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he managed all 45 investment strategies alone for over a year after his team was reduced from five members to one. Despite the immense pressure, Mr. D’Arco maintained performance across all strategies and ensured a smooth transition by training new hires before departing for his next opportunity.
Earlier in his career, Mr. D’Arco advanced through several roles at New York Life Investments. He began as a consultant from 2014 to 2016 before progressing to associate until 2017 and then senior associate until 2018. These roles allowed him to work as a trader, trading client funds. Recruited from T3 Trading Group, LLC, Mr. D’Arco worked as an equity trader between 2013 to 2014 after gaining experience as a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual from 2012 to 2013.
Mr. D’Arco received early experience as an audit intern with Samuel Klein and Co. from 2010 to 2012, while pursuing his undergraduate degree. He also spent over five years as a counselor with Bloomfield Parks and Recreation, beginning in 2005.
After graduating from high school from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey, in 2009, Mr. D’Arco earned a Bachelor of Science in finance from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, in 2013. His education provided the technical foundation necessary for success in high-frequency trading and portfolio management roles throughout his career.
Mr. D’Arco holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, an achievement that underscores his expertise in investing and sets him apart among peers in asset management. Additionally, as a member of the CFA Institute, he remains actively engaged in industry trends. Civically invested, Mr. D’Arco provides volunteer service to nonprofit organizations such as Relay for Life and Habitat for Humanity, as well as Bergen Catholic High School.
Highly regarded for his contrarian perspective on markets and stocks, Mr. D’Arco often seeks opportunities overlooked by others who follow prevailing trends. His passion for investing notably began at age 18, during the financial crisis, when he took an elective course on investments in high school. Inspired by this formative experience, he pursued finance studies at Boston College before launching his career on Wall Street as a trader. The environment, though it tested his resilience, also shaped his approach to risk management and client service.
Throughout his career, Mr. D’Arco has received notable recognition for his work, including earning Five Stars from Morningstar for fund performance. Looking ahead, he aims to grow the $1.6 billion fund under his management into a $10 billion flagship fund through sustained outperformance against industry benchmarks. He recognizes that achieving this goal will require exceptional effort given the competitive nature of asset management but remains optimistic about maintaining momentum alongside his dedicated team. Mr. D’Arco is also committed to supporting clients, many of whom are retirees or nearing retirement, by safeguarding their investments amid evolving economic challenges. Overall, his journey exemplifies dedication to professional growth, ethical responsibility toward clients and an unwavering commitment to excellence within the field of investing.
