Scott J. Friedman, CFA, FRM, partner and co-founder at Soroban Capital Partners LP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Business Owners for dedication, achievements and leadership in finance.
Widely renowned for his expertise in the financial sector, Mr. Friedman has built a distinguished career in global finance, risk management and the application of artificial intelligence (AI). As a partner and co-founder of Soroban Capital Partners LP, a leading global investment firm established in 2010, he sits on the management committee and investment team, builds comprehensive risk analytics and leads global trading. Leaders across Wall Street describe him as humble and quick to credit his teammates for his success. Mr. Friedman has deep experience trading across all global asset classes and capital structures.
During Mr. Friedman’s tenure, Soroban Capital has delivered a strong track record, benefiting the missions of major universities and charitable foundations. His civic involvement includes a long-term commitment to Success Academy. Beginning as a volunteer teacher, he later became a board member and treasurer, helping expand Success Academy to over 60 schools for low-income students. He also played an integral role in financially planning one of the largest U.S. K-12 high schools in the Bronx, supported by a $100 million donation from Michael Bloomberg. Mr. Friedman regards these charitable achievements as his most significant.
Prior to helping to establish Soroban Capital Partners, Mr. Friedman was global head of trading at TPG-Axon Capital from 2006 to 2010. His professional journey began at Goldman Sachs from 2001 to 2006 in the coveted principal strategies group, a highly secretive, ultra-selective, elite group viewed as a breeding ground for top investing talent. This role provided the deep cross-asset arbitrage product-level expertise that powered his later work.
Mr. Friedman has demonstrated a commitment to advancing quantitative finance and AI. He endowed the Scott J. Friedman Professor of AI and Finance at the University of Florida. He serves on the selection committee for UF AI Research Excellence Awards in breakthrough PhD research, alongside some of the brightest AI and deep learning experts from Nvidia’s AI Technology Center. Mr. Friedman also endowed the first professorship in AI and machine learning in sports data science and analytics, contributing to advancements that played a role in the university’s National Men’s Basketball Championship.
Mr. Friedman is an active member of leading industry organizations, holding the Financial Risk Management (FRM) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designations. He is a centennial member of the Chairman’s Circle in the renowned Economic Club of New York and serves on the advisory boards for both the New York Stock Exchange and the University of Florida Endowment.
Among his notable accomplishments, Mr. Friedman won the annual Wall Street poker tournament, donating his entire multimillion-dollar prize to charity benefiting Hillel International. He gifted the championship poker bracelet to his mother and attributes his success in the tournament to his grasp of mathematics and statistics from his career.
Mr. Friedman credits his success to a passion for continuous learning, a philosophy shaped by family values emphasizing science and education. Inspired by his family’s history, he supports initiatives that blend finance, engineering systems thinking, statistical rigor and principled AI.
Happily married and the father of two, Mr. Friedman leads an active life — skiing and playing golf, tennis and basketball. He is an avid college football fan, and is passionate about exercise, mathematics, science and physics. Looking toward the future, Mr. Friedman remains dedicated to supporting visionary leaders who drive innovation at the intersection of finance and AI, whose work is reshaping industries for the benefit of future generations.
